GLOSSARY OF FIREWORK TYPES

We use many different types of firework in our displays; in order to give newcomers a clue as to what we mean by a 'cake' or a 'candle', we have included the following glossary.

Select the type of firework you want to know more about here:    (Or just scroll down to see the list.)

Cake

A number (between 8 and 1000+) of single shot tubes fixed together in a box (looking like a cake!!) and fused in sequence. When fired they produce a barrage of effects from bangs and whistles to spinners and crackles.

A 100-shot Cake

Flare

A firework that produces an intense light and lots of smoke! Can be used very effectively to light areas of a garden or building.

Fountain

Remember the garden packs with a "Mount Vesuvius" or "Fairy Glitter" - well nothing like that - much, much bigger fireworks that can produce up to 6ft of glittering, coloured fire.

Lancework

Rods of fire (or lances!) arranged to form words, a picture or initials. Sometimes called 'firewriting', they can be used to give a personal touch to any firework display.

Mine

A charge which explodes at ground level - producing an enormous "V" shape of sparks, bangs, crackles and whistles.

A Crackling Mine

Rocket

Considerably larger than the rockets designed for garden firework displays - our rockets commonly exceed heights of 3-400 ft and produce a number of breathtaking effects. The rocket can always be identified by its characteristic sparkling tail on the way up.

Roman Candle

Roman candles (shortened, in firework speak, to 'candles') emit a number of stars from a tube. The difference between garden firework Roman Candles and our display candles is that with ours, the tube is about 2-3ft long and the projectiles that come out of them don't just burn in nice colours - they whizz, bang, whistle and perform a multitude of effects.

Candles over water

Shell

A device that is fired like a missile - from a mortar barrel - up to 500 ft in the air. Once at the peak of its trajectory it explodes into either a canopy of colour or a number of other effects, which can whistle, crackle or explode again!

Waterfall

A chain of fountains arranged to allow the sparks to fall some distance - producing a waterfall effect. Very spectacular over water.

Wheel

Known to most people as a Catherine Wheel. The wheels we use are up to 4 feet in diameter and produce different colours, noises and effects.
